The American lutenist, Timothy Allen Burris, graduated with soloist's diploma from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 1988, where he studied under the world-renowned lutenist, Toyohiko Satoh. After completing his residency at Duke University (MA), he took up a post as lute instructor at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, Belgium, a position he held for six years (1990-1996). Recipient of a Fulbright fellowship for 1994-1995 (at the TU Dresden), where he worked under the guidance of Hans-Günter Ottenberg, to complete his research into lute and theorbo practice in 18th-century Kursachsen. He received a Ph.D from Duke University for research into lute practice in 18th-century Dresden: Lute and Theorbo in Vocal Music in 18th-Century Dresden: A Performance Practice Study (Duke University, 1997).
Timothy Burris has performed and lectured throughout Europe and the USA, including concert appearances with Derek Lee Ragin, Julianne Baird, Paul Elliott and Jennifer Lane, among others. Appearances with larger ensembles have included a performance of Emilio Cavalieri's Rappresentazione di Anima e di Corpo in Siena, Italy under the baton of René Clemencic, and J.S. Bach's St John's Passion (BWV 245) with the Residentie Orkest of The Hague, under the direction of Peter Schreier. He has given numerous radio & television performances throughout the USA, Holland, France, Italy and Germany. In addition to solo performances, Timothy Burris appears with the tenor Timothy Johnson (as the duo Music's Quill).
Timothy Burris' recordings include modern premiers of works written for the Dresden court (“Divoti Affetti”, PGM), as well as the first complete recording of the songs of Philip Rosseter (as part of the duo Music’s Quill, with tenor Timothy Neill Johnson). He is currently preparing solo recordings of works by Pietro Paolo Melii (on archlute) and the Reußner family (on baroque lute). He contributed a performance of the J.S. Bach Prelude BWV 999 to the award-winning Seth Grossman film, "Shock Act".
Currently, Timothy Burris teaches lute at the Portland Conservatory of Music (Portland, Maine).
