The American soprano, Lydia Brotherton/Mahnkopf, began her musical education at age 3 on the violin. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music magna cum laude from Brown University (2001-2005); her Master of Music degree in in Voice and Historical Performance from Boston University (2007-2009). As a winner of a U.S. Fulbright performing arts grant in 2010-2011, she studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland
Lydia Brotherton is active as a freelance soprano since August 2011 and now lives in Berlin. She has performaned with Berlin Baroque in the Berliner Philharmoniker; with Andrea Marcon and La Cetra Barockorchester Basel; J.S. Bach’s H-moll Messe (BWV 232) with Académie baroque européene d’Ambronay under Sigiswald Kuijken; J.S. Bach’s Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) at Aldeburgh Easter Weekend with Mark Padmore, and as a Britten-Pears Young Artist. She has also performed with the Grammy-nominated Boston Early Music Festival, with Tragicomedia under Stephen Stubbs, J.S. Bach cantatas with the Handel and Haydn Society Boston, with Ensemble Phoenix Munich, and she has toured internationally as soloist with the Boston Camerata. Recent concert performances include also J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) with Ensemble Resonanz, BWV 204 with Bach:vokal Stuttgart (June 2017), and Russ' Ensemble Resonanz at Radialsystem V Berlin, in cooperation with Podium Esslingen. Oratorio performances include Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elias, J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244).
With the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra and Chorus, Lydia Brotherton has appeared in several chamber operas and their subsequent recordings for CPO, the most recent release of which won a GRAMMY Award and an ECHO Klassik Prize. She has recorded with Ensemble Phoenix Munich for Harmonia Mundi France, with the ensemble Candens Lilium for WDR/Raumklang. She has further recorded for Edel Classics, and Harmonia Mundi Germany (SONY).
As an active performer of new music, Lydia Mahnkopf has recently premiered roles in several new and contemporary operatic works, including two roles in RE:igen (Lang) in a production from the Schwetzingen Festspiele, Die Verwandlung and Die Blinden (Dittrich) at the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater, and Votre Faust (Pousseur) at Theater Basel and Radialsystem V Berlin. In 2015-2016 she sang the soprano role in Ligeti’s Aventures / Nouvelles Aventures in the Werkstatt of the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater, the operatic premiere of Richard Ayres' #42, In the Alps at the NODO Festival in Ostrava, Cezch Republic, and the premiere of Fabian Russ' Black is the colour with the Deutsche Kammerochester and electronics, which was recorded live for the Neue Meister Label (Edel Classics).
In January 2020, Lydia Mahnkopf founded Lullula Music studio in Berlin, Modern early childhood music education, offering . Out of our studio in Berlin, we offers workshops, performances, and courses centered around the voice, Motherhood, and early childhood music education. We're very excited to launch audio-first early childhood music education in 2021. |
