Ensemble Resonanz was founded in 1994 by members of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. After stops in Frankfurt and in Diez an der Lahn, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg became the home of the ensemble in 2002. There it established itself as Ensemble in Residence of the Laeiszhalle - Musikhalle Hamburg with the concert series Resonanzen. Since January 2017, the residency in the chamber music hall of the Elbphilharmonie continues.
With its unique programme, enthusiasm and artistic quality, Ensemble Resonanz ranks as one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras. In innovative programmes, the musicians bridge the gap between tradition and the present time. Their lively interpretation of old masterpieces in dialogue with contemporary compositions often leads to unusual and surprising insights.
The string ensemble is organized in a democratic way and works without a permanent conductor. However, partner artists have worked with the ensemble intensely as artists in residence. From 2010 to 2013, the cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras was artist in residence of the ensemble; since September 2013 Tabea Zimmermann has followed him in this position. For the 2016-2017 season, the Argentinian conductor and composer Emilio Pomàrico will play this part. Concerts and various performances at leading concert halls and festivals bring the musicians around the world, evoking great enthusiasm by the audience. Other partners of the ensemble are not only composers, soloists and conductors, but also media artists, directors and performing and visual artists. These included Helmut Lachenmann, Beat Furrer, Rebecca Saunders, Fazil Say, Matthias Goerne, Tabea Zimmermann, Emilio Pomàrico, Reinhard Goebel, Riccardo Minasi, Imre Kertész, Roger Willemsen, Falk Richter and RIAS-Kammerchor. Guest performance stations were u. a. the Salzburger Festspiele, Bachwoche Ansbach, RuhrTriennale, Wiener Konzerthaus, Philharmonie Luxemburg, Kölner Philharmonie, Théatre des Bouffes du Nord Paris, Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, Tonhalle Düsseldorf, Klangspuren Schwaz, LaBiennale Venedig, Ultraschall Festival, Philharmonie Berlin, MaerzMusik, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
At the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg the orchestra established itself as ensemble in residence and its concert series "Resonanzen" runs with great success in its 15th season. Starting in January 2017, its residency will be continued in the Elbphilharmonie. In the first season in the new house, the musicians invite the audience into the unknown, promising a new and surprising listening experience. Besides being the ensemble in residence of the Elbphilharmonie, the Ensemble Resonanz can be heard in jointly developed productions and will take part in various festivals and educational projects.
In the Schanzenviertel district of Hamburg, Ensemble Resonanz has since 2011 established the young monthly concert series Urban String, where classical and new music are combined with club atmosphere in a very unique way. Home of Ensemble Resonanz remains the Resonanzraum, which opened in 2014 in a bunker in the heart of St. Pauli. Here, the musicians established not only the concert series Urban String, but also the anchor events, which invite the audience to new experiences around the Resonanzen concerts: from philosophical discussions, workshops and listening presentations to the experimental format "offbeat".
Ensemble Resonanz's awards include the Würth-Preis der Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland (2002) and the Rudolf Stilcken Preis für Kultur-Kommunikation. For its exceptional architecture the Resonanzraum received the international AIT-Award. As a chamber music hall it can be rented by other artists and promoters for their own concerts or for other events. From 2002 to 2004 it was Ensemble in Residence of the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music. In the years 2005 to 2008, it accompanied the concert series " Kaispeicher entern" In the Hamburg HafenCity the construction of the Elbphilharmonie. Since 2014, the ensemble cooperates with the free music radio ByteFM - also based in the bunker Hamburg - as part of a monthly classical program. |
