The Italian tenor, Paolo Borgonovo, in addition to his vocal studies, graduated in classics, and also graduated in flute.
Paolo Borgonovo is dedicated mainly to early music, debuted as the protagonist (in the role of Tancredi) in the first modern implementation of the opera Erminia sul Giordano (1634) by Michelangelo Rossi at al Teatro "Manzoni" in Pistoia (September 2000), under the direction of Andrea Perugi. Among the more recent experiences: in 2011 Ariodante by George Frideric Handel, for the direction of Alan Curtis, with Joyce DiDonato in the title role at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris and in Baden-Baden (provided replicas in various European capitals in 2012), the very recent tour with Cantarlontano (Ancona, Frasassi, Utrecht Festival, Antwerp Festival) and Il canto di Orfeo (Festival of Hrastovlje, Musica negli Horti a San Quirico, Festival Internazionale Milano Arte Musica).
Among the most significant experiences outside of the early music repertoire: On May 5, 2005, at the Duomo in Milan, he participated in the world premiere worldwide, with soprano Barbara Zanichelli and organist Alessandro La Ciacera, in Klang: Die Erste Stunde for soprano, tenor and organ by Karlheinz Stockhausen, under the direction of the composer (commission of Duomo in Milan). He was soloist in L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano under the direction of Marc Andreae. In November 2008 he performed the world premiere of music by Giorgio Battistelli for vocal quartet and percussion, commissioned by the RSI (Radio della Svizzera Italiana); in 2010 a soloist in Camille Saint-Saëns' Christmas Oratorio in Lugano. In 2013 as a member ensemble Il canto di Orfeo, he participated in the performances of the opera Cuore di Cane by A. Raskatov at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
Paolo Borgonovo furthered his concert experience within the madrigal in the ensemble La Venexiana, the reference group in Europe with regard to the Italian madrigal. With La Venexiana and with other groups, including, recently Il canto di Orfeo, directed by G. Capuano, he performed in the ensemble and as a soloist various programmes of madrigals and sacred music of Renaissance and Baroque at music festivals in Italy and other countries, including Germany, France, Austria, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Lithuania, Switzerland. With friends Ella de Mircovich (founder of La Reverdie) and Matteo Zenatti, he loves designining and performing original shows that let them approach narration and music represented in Bellinzona hit La Gerusalemme Celeste, theatrical and musical text written in collaboration with de Mircovich.
Paolo Borgonovo has collaborated with the Coro della Radio Svizzera Italiana, a prestigious choral chamber ensemble directed by Diego Fasolis, with solo performances in concerts and recordings and guest conductors such as Claudio Abbado and Alain Lombard. In August 2006 he appeared at the Bruges Festival as a member of the Quintetto Madrigalistico della Radio Svizzera. Recently he participated with the Coro della Radio Svizzera Italiana at the Salzburg Festival production of Norma by Bellini under the artistic direction of Cecilia Bartoli.
Paolo Borgonovo has worked with various ensembles specializing in early music, including: The Reverdie (for which he also wrote the text of a play on Roman de Fauvel), Cantica Symphonia, Cantar Lontano, La Risonanza (Monteverdi's Vespers at KKL in Lucerne and Carlo Felice in Genoa), Ensemble Seicento-Novecento (Flavio Colusso), Fantazyas, Ensemble Vocale Veneto, Compagnia del Madrigale, Cantimbanco, Accademia Strumentale Italiana, Coro da Camera Ricercare Ensemble, Arcomelo.
His discography includes: two CD's of music by Heinrich Schütz (Sacrae Cantiones for four voices soloists and organ), in the framework of the project dedicated by the label Brilliant opera omnia to the 17th-century composer; the Selva Morale e Spirituale by C. Monteverdi with La Venexiana; Missa S. Jacobi by G. Dufay with La Reverdie; Concerti Accademici by Stefano Bernardi with Cantimbanco; Madrigals by Scacchi, Monteverdi, Merula and others with Ensemble Vocale Veneto; Carmina Burana with La Reverdie; Cantar à la Venetiana with Accademia Strumentale Italiana under the direction of Alberto Rasi; Madrigali intorno all’Orlando Furioso with the Compagnia del Madrigale (recently released by Glossa). He records the the complete Sammlungen by Georg Benda (Lieder and songs) for Brilliant with Michele Benuzzi and Ensemble Arcomelo.
Paolo Borgonovo performs in Italy and in Europe as a guest soloist with various vocal or symphony ensembles. With the Coro e l'Orchestra Verdi Barocca, he has often performed as a soloist at the Auditorium of Milan (among others in the Vespro della Beata Vergine by C. Monteverdi under the direction of Gianluca Capuano), under the direction of Ruben Jais, in works by J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, Haydn, W.A. Mozart, Gilles, etc. As an interpreter of Lieder he has collaborated with harpsichordist Michele Benuzzi and with fortepianist Carmen Leoni.
In 2008 he was invited to give a master-class on Italian madrigal in a course by by the Czech Society of Early Music that takes place annually in Valtice (Cezecg Republic). He also collaborates with Radio della Svizzera Italiana as journalist of live music, often dealing with recording reviews. |
