The Austrian tenor, Bernhard Berchthold [Berchtold], studied an the Innsbruck Conservatory, continuing his vocal studies at the Mozateum in Salzburg with Horiana Branisteanu. Subsequently he attended the Lieder class of Harmut Höll. Throughout his career as a singer of Lieder, oratorio and opera, he has been showered with numerous distinction, including prize-winner at the 1999 International Summer Academy of Salzburg with a concert at the renowned Salzburg Festival. In March 2000 in Graz, he shone brightly at the international competition, "Franz Schubert und die Musik der Moderne", winning several prizes, including the special prize for “Best Interpretation of a Work by Franz Schubert”. In 2002, he was selected to be “Lieder Artist of the Season” at the Hugo Wolf Academy in Stuttgart, which included a special concert tour in recital halls and was documented with a broadcast on the South German Radio of Wolf’s cycle, The Spanish Liederbook as well as on a CD of Wolf Lieder.
Bernhard Berchthold has had numerous engagements at home and abroad, such as Der Vogelhändler (Adam) by C. Zeller at the Operettenfestspiele Bad Ischl, W.A. Mozart's Idomineo (Idomeneo) at the Herkules-Saal Munich, concert tours to Italy, Holland, Chicago, Hong Kong. He has been guest artist at numerous European festivals, including the Early Music Festival of Bratislava, the Handel Festival of Karlsruhe, the Music of Kassel, the Keyboard Festival of Ruhr, the Ludwigsburg Fortress Festival, the Styriarte in Graz and the Vienna Festival Weeks. He also has made concert tours in China and the USA, including performances of works by Liszt and Bruckner with the Chicago Master Singers under Alan Heatherington.
Since 2003-2004 season, Bernhard Berchthold is a member of the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, where he was heard in the great W.A. Mozart tenor roles (Tamino, Belmonte, Idomeneo) as well as Steuermann in Holländer, Lenski in Eugen Onegin and the pilot in Der Kleine Prinz. Additionally he has performed at the Teatro Communale in Bologna, the State Opera in Hannover, the Landestheater in Salzburg and the State Theatre in Wiesbaden. Bernhard Berchthold’s role as an interpreter of Schubert, as prominently featured on West German Radio in the song cycles Schwanengesang and Winterreise, was revived at the Keyboard Festival of Ruhr in both 2005 and 2006. Under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Berchthold sang the role of Le Remendado in Georges Bizet’s Carmen at the Styriarte Festival 2006 in Graz. He sang at the Salzburg Festival 2006 in even three productions: Bastien and Bastienne, Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots and Der Schauspieldirektor. Another invitation to the Salzburger Festspiele followed in summer 2007.
In October 2006 Bernhard Berchthold took part of the production of Zimmermann’s Die Soldaten at the RuhrTriennale. The DVD recording of this production was awarded with The German Record Critics' Award. In October 2007 he was also part of the cast of the renewal. In November 2007 he was guest at the Theater an der Wien, where he will sing in Orlando Paladino under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In March 2008 he sang in Das Paradies und die Peri by Robert Schumann with the Wiener Philharmoniker under Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the Wiener Musikverein. In 2007-2008 season he sang at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe the following rolls: Christian in Cyrano de Bergerac, Prinz Sou-Chong in Das Land des Lächelns, Max in Der Freischütz, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, San Giovanni in La Resurrezione, Werther in Werther. |
