The Canadian soprano, Dawn Bailey, studied Music at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montreal; Music and Languages at the University of Alberta (2004-2006). She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance with Honours from the University of Toronto (2006-2009); her Master of Music degree in Early Music from McGill University (2010-2011); and her Master of Music degree in Classical Voice Performance from Conservatorium van Amsterdam in the Netherelands (2013-2016). Her principal teachers and mentors include Valérie Guillorit, Suzie LeBlanc, Monica Whicher, Daniel Taylor, Aline Kutan, and Lorna MacDonald. She has also been a finalist and semi-finalist at several prestigious vocal competitions in the past several years. She advanced to the final round of the Canticum Gaudium Early Music Vocal Competition in Poznan, Poland in November 2013 where she was awarded a prize of distinction. She has also participated as a finalist in the Festival International de Musique Baroque de Lamèque in New Brunswick, the Handel Singing Competition in Toronto, and the Froville International Baroque Singing Competition in France.
Dawn Bailey is a self-employed soprano since 2007. She is a versatile artist, recognized for her engaging performances in a wide variety of vocal styles. she is equally at ease on the concert and operatic stages, moving fluidly from chamber music to opera, oratorio, and art song. Especially sought after for her imaginative interpretations of music from the 17th and 18th centuries, she has appeared with some of Canada’s leading early music ensembles, including Tafelmusik, Toronto Consort, Ensemble Caprice (Director: Matthias Maute), The Toronto Masque Theatre, Aradia Ensemble (Director: Kevin Mallon) , Les Violons du Roy (Director: Bernard Labadie), Theatre of Early Music (Director: Daniel Taylor), and le Studio de musique ancienne de Montreal.
Dawn Bailey has premiered several new compositions by Canadian composers, recently appearing in Brian Current’s new opera Airline Icarus with Soundstreams in Toronto. Other recent operatic roles include Artemia in Cavalli’s Artemisia in Boston, Flore in Charpentier’s La Couronne de Fleurs in Seattle, and Filena in Cavalli’s Gli Amori di Apollo e Dafne in Toronto. Last season (2013-2014), she appeared as a soloist in J.S. Bach’s Saint John Passion (BWV 245) in Ottawa, a programme of 17th century Italian music with Aradia Ensemble in Toronto, Campra’s L’Europe Galante with the Compagnie Baroque Mont-Royal, and a programme entitled "Vivaldi’s Secret Bride" with Ensemble Caprice in Calgary, Alberta.
In the 2014-2015 season, Dawn Bailey had an exciting array of performances, both in Canada and abroad. Some highlights include singing a programme of Carissimi oratorios in Maastricht with the Dutch Baroque ensemble Ad Mosam, a recital of French Baroque Venus cantatas with the same ensemble, collaboration with storyteller Tess MacManus and Celtic harpist Susan Toman in a programme of Irish Celtic Music at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Canada, and a programme of Easter music with organist Jean-Willy Kunz at the monastery in St-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec.
