The Italian mezzo-soprano, Carla Nahadi Babelegoto, was born in Terlizzi, Bari, Italy, and grew up in Lodi (according to her Facebook profile she was born in Oz, Papua, Indonesia). She began her singing experience in the kids choir of Lodi cathedral at 12. She studied Energy Engineering at Politecnico of Milan (Class of 2009) and singing, trombone and piano at the Accademia Internazionale della Musica di Villa Simonetta of Milan (Class of 2007), with respectively Vincenzo Manno, Giovanni di Stefano and Ariella Soffritti. She attended Baroque and belcanto singing master-classes with Sara Mingardo, Rinaldo Alessandrini and Luciana D'intino and studied vocal technique with Marina de Liso, Thomas Michael Allen, Franco Farina and John Norris.
Carla Babelegoto has specialized in early music, even if she likes to sing and perform everything from any time and space. She has sung on stages, in churches, squares, circus shows, theater plays, under the rain and in windy Danish islands. She has collaborated with Laverdi Barocca di Milano (since 2010), with the coreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker in the contemporary dance performances Cesena and En Atendant; with the ensemble Ghislieri Consort from Pavia (2009-2011) conducted by Giulio Prandi and with Christoph Spering. She has been the singer-actress in the street-theater show Creature (created by Alessandro Serena, Marcello Chiarezza and produces by Pantakin da Venezia) in many and wonderful street festivals and theaters throughout Europe.
Carla Babelegoto nowadays works with many ensembles and conductors, like Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: Philippe Herreweghe; since July 2009), René Jacobs, Andreas Spering, Capella de La Torre, specialized in Renaissance music, the musicians’ collective graindelavoix (Björn Schmelzer, medieval repertoire), Concerto Romano (Director: Alessandro Quarta), the Renaissance music ensemble Lala Höhö, Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Director: Jos van Veldhoven), Musik Podium Stuttgart, Club Medieval, Ensemble Lucidarium (since June 2019), with the Commedia dell’Arte Company “Pantakin da Venezia”.
Carla Babelegoto has performed in numerous festivals and concert halls; some of them are Tage Alte Musik, Herne, Tage der Alte Musik Basel, Edinburgh International Festival, Tage Alter Musik Regensburg, Le crete Senesi Asciano, Warsaw Chopin Festival, Saintes Festival, Sagra Musicale Umbra, Stagione della DePhilarmonie Anversa, TAP Poitiers, Associazione Scarlatti Napoli, Lincoln Center New York, Styriarte, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw Bruges, Auditório Nacional de Madrid, De Doelen Rotterdam, BAM Brookyln, Montalbane festival Freyburg, York Early Music Festival.
In August 2014 Carla Babelegoto was Melissa in the Le fate by Ristori at the theater of Gotha, Germany, during the Ekhof festival. The opera has been performed as première in modern times. In April 2017 she was Pulcheria in George Frideric Handel's Riccardo primo at the theatre of Ulm, Germany (Hassler Consort, Franz Raml). In January 2019 she recorded the role of San Bernardo in the sacred work San Guglielmo d’Aquitania by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, for the label musica Novantiqua. She works regularly for the music theater company, Silbersee (Romain Bischoff), from Amsterdam, as a singer and performer. She will be Galatea in Aci Galatea and Polifemo by G.F. Handel at the Theater Ulm in May 2021. She currently lives in Arezzo, Italy. |
