The English soprano, Penelope Appleyard, graduated with Distinction in Vocal and Operatic Studies from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She studies with Julie Kennard and Christine Cairns and has appeared in master-classes with Catherine Bott, James Bowman, Michael Chance and Emily van Evera.
“Blessed with a voice of pristine clarity”, Penelope Appleyard is becoming known for the purity and agility of her voice, and her stylish interpretations of historical repertoire. She now performs internationally as a soloist and consort singer, particularly in the field of early music. She has performed at prestigious venues from Mexico to Istanbul, and has worked with ensembles including The New London Consort (Director: Philip Pickett), Taverner Consort (Director: Andrew Parrott), Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner), Wiener Akademie, London Bach Singers and Feinstein Ensemble (Director: Martin Feinstein), Arcangelo (Director: Jonathan Cohen), Armonico Consort (Director: Christopher Monks), Ex Cathedra (Director: Jeffrey Skidmore) and the Royal Shakespeare Company, also appearing on numerous recordings.
Operatic roles have included Cupid in Venus and Adonis, Dorinda in The Tempest, Shepherdess and Siren in King Arthur, Bonvica in Bonduca, Pallas in Judgement of Paris, Second Woman in Dido and Aeneas, Mopsa in Fairy Queen and Belinda in Dido and Aeneas alongside Roderick Williams.
Penelope Appleyard appears regularly on the concert platform, having sung as a soloist at venues including Cadogan Hall, St John's Smith Square, Handel House and Bridgewater Hall. Engagements have included J.S. Bach's B minor Mass(BWV 232) at the Bologna Festival with David Roblou and Philip Pickett, Arne’s Alfred with Steven Devine, MonteverdiVespers with Laurence Cummings and PurcellKing Arthur for the Brighton Early Music Festival. She has a particular love for chamber music and is soprano soloist with period chamber ensemble Florisma, with whom she has recently recorded George Frideric Handel's Neun Deutsche Arien for Convivium Records to critical acclaim. She collaborates regularly with lutenist Hector Sequera - with whom she has performed for the National Lute Society and Medieval and Renaissance Society - and is a member of the ensemble Dowland Works, led by Dame Emma Kirkby. She also sings with acclaimed a cappella group Apollo5 (since 2016). She got married on April 9, 2016.
