The English flautist, recorder player and music director, Martin Feinstein, played jazz piano from a young age. He began playing the flute at the age of 15, inspired by hearing the works of J.S. Bach. Three years later he began flute and recorder studies at the Royal College of Music and there won a German Government Scholarship which enabled him to continue his training in Hamburg with the great German flautist Karlheinz Zoeller.
After spells working in Hamburg and Frankfurt with the Hamburger Symphoniker and Ensemble Modern, Martin Feinstein returned to London to form the Feinstein Ensemble. He is recognised as one of the UK's leading period flute players. As a soloist and with his Ensemble, he has performed, broadcast and recorded a wide range of repertoire on both modern and period instruments. In 2007 he was invited by BBC Television to introduce, direct and perform a groundbreaking broadcast of all six Brandenburg Concerti (BWV 1046-1051). His sonata and concerto recordings for Naxos, Black Box Music, Sanctuary Records, Dutton Epoch, Barn Cottage Records and BBC Television have met with critical praise both in the UK and abroad. Fanfare (USA) said that “Feinstein’s flute-playing is beyond praise - I have never heard better.” Gramophone described Feinstein as “A graceful player and decisive conductor.” They noted that “Feinstein has acquired a formidable command of Bach’s very particular style..these are virtuoso flute concertos played with great authenticity and consummate musicianship.”
Apart from performing in all of London’s major venues, Martin Feinstein has toured in the Far East, Germany, the Gulf and Egypt, Israel, Belgium and Holland. His love of J.S. Bach's music continues to inspire his work. He currenbtly lives in London, England. |
