[To William L. Hoffman] I have been reading the BWV list of all known Bach Cantatas. Would you have to know what the abbreviation Anh, means---is this a German abbreviation or some other language other than French, English, or Italian?? (maybe Dutch or Flemish?)lvb

[To Ludwig] Anh. means “Anhang” or Appendix. It is used with works whose authenticity has not been fully secured, in the case of Bach, these are works where only the text survives while the music is lost.

Some of these works were only recently listed in the BWV Anhang, Anh. 190-212 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bach_cantatas, scroll to bottom) and BWV (21st-century additions to the BWV catalogue (BWV 1127 and higher). The additional (BWV 1129-1164) are not yet posted on Bach Digital, https://www.bach-digital.de/content/index.xed. We can assume that the 22 recent Anh. works are now listed in the BWV catalogue. Previously, the most accurate listing was Werner Neumann, Handbuch der Kantaten Johann Sebastian Bachs, 5th ed. 1984 (last), https://www.amazon.de/Handbuch-Kantaten-Johann-Sebastian-Bachs/dp/3765100544, 2. "Nur teilweise erhaltene verschollene und zweifelhafte Kantaten" (Only partially extant, not heard-of-again and dubious cantatas).

Do you know if all of the new BWV designations are for pieces whose music is lost or have new scores by Bach been discovered? (Hoping for the latter

Also, looking at the list of lost cantatas on Wikipedia from the Anhang, their number appears to fall a little short of the 36 new BWV numbers. Are there some non-cantata works among the new listings?

[To Anthony Kozar] We also need to add the earliest BWV Anh 1-21 vocal works to the newer numbers, BWV Anh. 190–211 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bach_cantatas) to fill out the 35 new numbers.. I also suspect that a few organ works in the BWV Anh. category may be accepted, although there is still a great debate among organ scholars, as well as the motet BWV Anh. 158, Ich lasse dich nicht. We have to wait until the official list surfaces.

In case anyone is interested, here are some organ works from the Anhang of which I am aware that have been recorded and included in "complete organ works" collections. I would guess the organists felt these works deserve more attention as possibly authentic works of Bach.

Herr Christ, der ein'ge Gottes Sohn, BWV Anh. II/55

Herr Christ, der ein'ge Gottes Sohn, BWV Anh. 75
Partita on Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein, BWV Anh. 78
O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid, BWV Anh. 200

The last of these is an unfinished fragment from the Orgelbüchlein autograph which makes me wonder why it wasn't included in the non-Anhang section of the original BWV.

[To Anthony Kozar] Re. BWV Anh. 200, there are only two bars, no comment from Peter Williams that I can find; Russel Stinson, The Orgelbuechlein (1999), says it is a melody chorale. Completions are listed in the Orgelbeuchlein Project http://www.orgelbuechlein.co.uk/the-chorales/. I will revisit the chorale in the coming BCML discussion of Passiontide chorales.
