Cantata BWV 147 "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and mouth and deed and life) was composed by J.S. Bach in Leipzig for the Feast of Visitation of Mary in 1723. It is partly based on an earlier cantata BWV 147a for the 4th Sunday in Advent, composed in Weimar in 1716, of which only part of the text has survived. Cantata BWV 147 is scored for soprano, alto, tenor & bass soloists; 4-part Chorus; and orchestra of trumpet, 2 oboes, oboe d'amore, 2 oboes da caccia, 2 violins, viola, continuo (including violoncello & violone in Mvt. 7). The cantata is known mostly for its chorale "Jesus bleibet meine Freude" (Jesu joy of man's desiring) but the rest of it is also highly gratifying.
