The German composer, Frank Zabel, graduated in piano with Pi-hsien Chen and music theory with Friedrich Jaecker and Roland Löbner at the Cologne Musikhochschule. He has been Professor of music theory at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf since 2001.
Regular performances of his music take place at international festivals and concert halls in Europe, the USA and Asia, including the Darmstadt Ferienkurse, Weltmusiktage, Warsaw Autumn, Gaudeamus Competition, Academy of Fine Arts Singapore, Kulturhauptstadt Ruhr 2010, Philharmonie Luxemburg, Nationaltheater Lissabon, Gustav Mahler Academy Orchestra and the MDR Musiksommer.
Frank Zabel has received composition commissions from the Berlin Philharmonie, Beethovenfest Bonn, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Tonhalle Düsseldorf, the German Parliament, the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen and many others.
Frank Zabel has won numerous international composition prizes, most recently the Casella Award in Sienna, Italy, but also in Rome, Tokyo, Luxembourg and Boston. Prominent interpreters of his music include renowned soloists and orchestras, for example the Orchestra della Toscana, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken, Ensemble Mosaik, Luxembourg Sinfonietta, Minguett Quartett, Andreas Scholl, and Alliage Quartet. He was the composer-in-residence with the Bergische Symphoniker during the 2007-2008 concert season. Frank Zabel performs as a piano soloist and with the Ensemble Différance.
Many important broadcasting companies have produced recordings of his works: Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Südwestdeutscher Rundfunk, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, Deutschlandfunk and Radio Poland. Several CDs of Frank Zabel's music are available, e. g. ENTRÜCKTE GESÄNGE in co-production with Bayerischer Runkfunk. |
