Gottlob Michael Wintzer [Wüntzer] was born to Johann Michael Wintzer (innkeeper Leipzig). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 9, 1729; and studied there from 1729 to 1736, since May 17, 1727 already as external; and at Universität Leipzig in 1735. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. J.S. Bach reported (May 1729): “not demonstrating abilities in music”; was nevertheless accepted. J.S. Bach’s letter in Leipzig from June 3, 1729 states that his voice was rather weak but with private instruction he might be usable. J.S. Bach reported (August 23, 1730) “incompetent, not at all musical”. |
