Johann Christoph Voigt was born the son of Christoph Voigt in Geithain. He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 27, 1738; studied there from 1738 to 1745, since March 14, 1738 already as external; and at Universität Leipzig from 1744. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him.
