Johann Gottlieb Thieme was born to Paul Thieme (tailor in Belgern). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 10, 1727; and studied there from 1727 to 1734, since March 26, 1726 already as external; and at Universität Leipzig from 1734. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. J.S. Bach reported (August 23, 1730): “not yet ready to be used in the 1st choir (figural music)”. His elder brother, Johann Samuel Thieme, was also a Thomaner (1722-1730).
