Christian Friedrich Steidel was born to Johann Christian Steidel (court servant in Dresden). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 10, 1727; studied there from 1727 to 1733; received lessoins also in Altenburg; and studied at Universität Leipzig from 1735. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. J.S. Bach reported (August 23, 1730): “not yet ready to be used in the 1st choir (figural music)”. After his studies, he worked as schoolmaster in Hartmannsdorf, near Chemnitz, Saxony from 1739.
