Johann Abraham Stäps enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 18, 1720; studied there from 1720 to 1724; and at Universität Leipzig from 1724. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. After his studies, he worked as schoolmaster in the area around Pausa? Not verifiable as a Kantor in Pausa itself (Hiller 1890 deest), but perhaps active in the area. His son, Gottlob Abraham Stäps (born 1742 in Pausa; died May 31, 1822 in Schleusingen) was also a Thomaner (1756-1764); studied at Universität Leipzig from 1764; worked as Kantor substitute in Naunhof from 1768, Kantor in Schleusingen from 1773.
My Heritage Website lists: Johann Abraham Staeps (born c1711 in in Pausa-Mühltroff, Saxony); married Eleonora Dorothea Staeps (born Helmert on October 7, 1709, in Pausa-Mühltroff, Saxony); had 2 children: Gottlob Abraham Staeps (1741-1822) and Dorothea Sophie Staeps.
