Johann Christian Jacob Schmidt (Kantor, Organ, Bach's Pupil?) |
Born: 1707 - Zella, Thuringia, Germany
Died: June 18, 1768 - Zella, Thuringia, Germany |
Johann Christian Jacob Schmidt was born the son of Johann Schmidt (organist in Zella; C-1).He studied at hE Universität Jena (enrollment on October 10, 1725) and at Universität Leipzig (enrollment on November 11, 1727). From 1740 he worked as Kantor in Sommerhausen (near Würzburg); later as Kantor in Zella, Themar and Schleusingen; from 1746 as organist in Zella, succeeding his father Johann Schmidt in this post.
Loeffler took up an apprenticeship of Johann Christian Jacob Schmidt with J.S. Bach because he suspected that he was a dedicatee to Canon BWV 1078. In the meantime, however, Benjamin Gottlieb Faber (B-37) is considered the intended one. A previously considered identity of Schmidt with the engraver of J.S. Bach's Die Kunst der Fuge BWV 1080 (Wiemer 1977) was soon abandoned in favor of Johann Georg Schübler (A-46) (Wiemer 1979). Apart from studying in Leipzig, there are no more indications for J.C.J Schmidt taking lessons with J.S. Bach.
