Johann Salomon Riemer was born the son of a teacher in Otterwisch. He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 8, 1716; studied there from 1716 to 1723; and at Universität Leipzig from 1724. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. After his studies, he worked as concert copyist, hornist and violist in the Großen Concert in Leipzig (1740-1750's); university porter.
