The German pianist and composer, Wolfgang Edward [Eduard] Rebner, was the son of violinist Adolph Rebner (1876-1967), who was a friend of composer Arnold Schoenberg and teacher of composer Paul Hindemith. Wolfgang studied at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main.
Wolfgang Edward Rebner served as accompanist to the cellist Emanuel Feuermann in the USA (1935-1937) and South America. He left Germany in 1939 and pursued a career in Hollywood as a pianist. He often performed in Los Angeles for Peter Yates's Evenings on the Roof which evolved into the famous "Monday Evening Concerts." After World War II, he became more and more involved with the music of his homeland, finally returning to Germany permanently in 1955 to teach at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich.
It was in Hollywood that Wolfgang Edward Rebner met the pianist Theodore Saidenberg, a much sought-after accompanist and partner in chamber music. Theodore Saidenberg (1908-1986) and Rebner who teamed up on radio, perform in 1946 a two-piano version of Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, BWV 147, a work that is best known in Myra Hess’s extraordinary two-hand transcription.
Wolfgang Edward Rebner composed many works, among them some excellent chamber music and orchestral suites, including Persönliche Noten (1961), Aus Sudamerika (1964) and Montagnola for orchestra. |
