Johann Nicolaus Mempel [variants: Nikolaus, Mempell, Mämpel] was a German musician. He was born the son of Johann Veit Mempel (schoolmaster in Heyda). From 1740 to his death, he seved as Kantor in Apolda. Along with Johann Gottlieb Preller, he copied one of the most important manuscript collections of the organ and keyboard music of J.S. Bach, known as the Mempell-Preller-Handschrift. He may have come into contact with J.S. Bach's music when he was a student of Johann Peter Kellner or through Johann Gottfried Walther, though it is not known for certain.
Since Johann Nicolaus Mempel is known as an important J.S. Bach collector (Sammlung Mempel-Preller), Löffler assumed that he took his lessons from J.S. Bach. According to J.N. Mempel's biographical data, this should have taken place in Leipzig in the 1730's, but is unlikely. On the one hand, a stay of J.N. Mempel in J.S. Bach, for example through the university matrices, cannot be proven; on the other hand, after Hans-Joachim Schulze and Peter Wollny, training appears with other members of the Bach family in Ohrdruf or Arnstadt, or with Bachians such as Johann Peter Kellner (C-14) in Gräfenroda or Johann Caspar Vogler (A-1) in Weimar.
