Samuel Kinner was a German hymn-writer. While the hymn researcher Philipp Wackernagel suspects that Kinner could have been a son of the hymn-writer Martin Kinner of Scherffenstein, the author of the ADB (Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie,) article leads to another thesis. According to him, the hymn-writer Samuel Kinner could be the same person as the Brieg (Breslau) doctor of the same name, who died 65 years old on August 10, 1668 in Brieg, but then he could at most be a grandson of Martin Kinner.
Samuel Kinner was a native of Breslau, and after he had graduated M.D. was for some time a physician and practiced medicine there. He then entered the service of the Duke of Liegnitz-Brieg as Rath and Court Physician. He died in Brieg on August 10, 1668, at the age of 65 (J. H. Cunradus's Silesia Togata, Liegnitz, 1706, p. 150).
One hymn ascribed to Samuel Kinner: Herr
Jesu Christ, du hast bereit. It is a
sacrament song that was very popular in Silesia in particular. It is first found in the Gesangbuch von Jeremias Weber, printed in Leipzig in 1638 or already in 1630. |
