Johann Gottlieb Kästner enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on July 21, 1723; studied there from 1723 to 1729; and at Universität Leipzig from 1729. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. After his studies, he worked as Kantor and organist in Trebsen (near Leipzig) from 1742, already as a substitute since 1731.
