Walden Hughes (Composer, Arranger)

Born: USA

The American composer and teacher, Walden Hughes, Hughes graduated from Northewest Nazarene University (NNU) with a bachelor of arts in applied piano and music theory in 1977 and began his college teaching career two days after his 23rd birthday. He earned a master of music in piano performance from the University of Idaho in 1979, and a doctor of arts in music history and literature and piano pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado in 1992.

Walden Hughes teaches piano, music history, composition and counterpoint at Northwest Nazarene University (NNU), where he has served for the past 30 years. During his years there he molded and mentored an accomplished group of piano performers and teachers. He also founded and arranges music for the NNU Piano Ensembles. He was one of three USA music teachers awarded the 1995 "Master Teacher Certificate" by the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). In recognition of 30 years as a dedicated professor and teacher of music, along with a national reputation as composer/arranger, he has been selected by the NNU Alumni Association Board of Directors for the 2007 Professional Achievement Award.

Walden Hughes’ publications include 30 articles published in Clavier, Piano Quarterly, American Music Teacher, Piano and Keyboard, Piano Guild Notes, and Music Review; 18 CD reviews for American Record Guide; 12 book reviews of new piano pedagogy and repertoire books; and 13 CD reviews for Clavier. He has written 88 piano ensemble compositions and arrangements for 1 piano 4 hands, 2 pianos 4 hands, 1 piano 6 hands, 2 pianos 8 hands, 2 pianos 12 hands, 4 pianos 16 hands, 4 pianos 8 hands, 4 pianos 24 hands and 8 pianos 16 hands, which have been performed widely by faculty and student ensembles in 51 countries. He was commissioned to write works specifically for performance by Hvaler School of the Arts, Norway; Katholische Universitaet Eichstaett, Germany; Kipnis/Kushner Duo, New York; Santa Fe Guitar Quartet, Argentina; and the Louisiana Music Teacher’s Association 2004 state convention. His piano ensemble works have been performed in 45 states and 49 countries; he has recorded Bach and the Romantics and Bach and the Romantics 2 on CDs for MP3.com 2000; and is an MP3 Artist with 40 internet recordings.
