Johann Theodor Herrmann was born the son of Johann Christian Herrmann (judge in Geithain). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 23, 1739; studied there from 1739 to 1745, since November 8, 1738 already as external; and at Universität Leipzig from 1744. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him.
