Carl Ephraim Haupt (Sexton, Bach's Pupil) |
Born: May 10, 1728 - Cleuden (Thekla), near Leipzig, Saxony, Germany
Died: July 19, 1783 - Leipzig, Saxony, Germany |
Carl Ephraim Haupt was born the son of Johann Ernst Haupt (schoolmaster in Cleuden (Thekla)). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on February 13, 1744; and studied there from 1744 to 1748. As a Thomaner he was in Choir III (in the New Church) from May 17, 1744 (Pentecost) to June 6, 1745 (Pentecost). Haupt was often sent by J.S. Bach to get the wine the Kantor had earned when providing the music for weddings, is listed in the university records as being from "Hohenficla," which can be translated as "Hohenfichte," probably a place in southern Saxony. However, Haupt came from "Hohenthecla"; Thekla is now part of the city of Leipzig. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. After his studies, he worked as sexton at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig from 1758. |
