Justus Friedrich Günz was born the son of Gottfried Günz (Pastor in Königstein). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on July 1, 1737; studied there from 1737 to 1741, since October 10, 1736 already as external; and at Universität Leipzig from 1741. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him.
