Born: June 20, 1709 - Berga (near Weida), Thuringia, Germany
Died: March 23, 1742 - Kieritzsch, Saxony, Germany |
Johann Tobias Dietze [Diez, Tietze] was born to Gottfried Guffer (master of cooper). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 2, 1724 and studied there from 1724 to 1731; and at Universität Leipzig in 1729. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. J.S. Bach reported (1730): “incompetent, not at all musical”. After his studies, he was Magister in Wittenberg (1739), and Pastor in Kieritzsch (1740). |
