Christian Gottlieb Gerlach was born to Christian Gerlach (organist in Rochlitz). ). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 27, 1719; studied there from 1719 to 1726, and and at Universität Leipzig from 1727. Like other J.S. Bach's pupils, he helped him in copying in 1723-1725, appearing in the manuscripts as Anon. Ij. After his studies, he became Kantor Petrikirche in Rochlitz in 1733.
