Ján Francisci (Composer, Kantor, Organ, Bach's Pupil) |
Born: June 14, 1691 - Neusohl, Upper Hungary (now: Banská Bystrica, Slovakia)
Died: April 27, 1758 - Neusohl, Upper Hungary |
Ján [Jan, János, Johann] Francisci was a Hungarian/Slovak organist and composer. He was born the son of Georg (Juraj) Francisci (Kantor of the Evangelisch-Geutschen Gemeinde in Neusohl); Attended the Gymnasiums in Neusohl. In 1709 he succeeded his father as Kantor there before going to Vienna in 1722 and he visited J.S. Bach in Leipzig in 1725. From 1733 he worked as a church musician/music director in Preßburg (now Bratislava) until 1735, when he returned to Neusohl and worked privately. In 1737 he resumed his former occupation there and, except for the years 1743-1748, remained in it until his death.
Ján Francisci, in his autobiography published in 1740 in Johann Mattheson's Ehren-Pforte, reported on a trip to Leipzig in 1725: "Ich hatte das Glück, den berühmten Hrn. Capellmeister Bach kennen zu lernen, und aus dessen Geschicklichkeit meinen Nutzen zu ziehen" (I was lucky enough to get to know the famous Mr. Capellmeister Bach and to derive my benefit from his skill). Formulation of a lesson in the conventional sense seems doubtful. With regard to Francisci's age of around 34 at this time, the most likely thing to think of at this time was a shorter training.
