Hubert J. Foss (Composer, Arranger)

Born: May 2, 1899 - Croydon, England
Died: May 27, 1953 - London, England

The English writer on music and composer, Hubert J(ames) Foss, attended Bradfield College. In 1921 he became a member of the educational department of the Oxford University Press, and in 1924 founded the music deptment, which he headed until 1941.

Hubert Foss composed 7 Poems by Thomas Hardy for Baritone, Men's Chorus, and Piano; instrumental pieces; songs. He was the author of Music in My Time (1933); The Concertgoer's Handbook (London, 1946); Ralph Vaughan Williams (London, 1950); also collected and edited The Heritage of Music, Essays... (2 vols., London, 1927-1934). His book London Symphony: Portrait of an Orchestra remained unfinished at his death, and was completed by Noel Goodwin (London, 1954).
