Johann Christian Dietel was born the son of Johann Caspar Dietel (Kantor in Falkenhain). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 8, 1733; studied there from 1733 to 1741; and at Universität Leipzig from 1741. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. He received his Ordination in Leipzig in 1751; and his Magister degree in Wittenberg in 1761. He was Pastor in Obereichstädt from 1751.
