Friedrich Wilhelm Damm enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 21, 1721; studied there from 1721 to 1730; and at Universität Leipzig from 1729. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. His elder brother, Johann Carl Damm (1703-1743), was also a Thomaner (1715-1723).
