Johann August Claus was born to Johann Christian Claus (miller in Brehna). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 1, 1731; and studied there from 1731 to 1739, since October 27, 1729 already as external. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. He applied unsuccessfully as schoolmaster in Schönefeld in 1738; and studied at Universität Leipzig from 1739. |
