History & Mission: |
Every 3rd Sunday of the month the Cantorij participates in the morning service in the Nieuwe Kerk, Groningen. The choir rehearses unknown songs with the congregation, as well as solid liturgical items (such as the Kyrie and Gloria and certain eucharistic prayers). The choir sings with the congregation and the pastor psalms and hymns with many verses in antiphon in place and the Cantorij often sings polyphonic settings; the choir also handles regularly motets (polyphonic singing scriptures), chorales and other appropriate church music in these services.
In addition, the Cantorij has built a broad repertoire of choral works by composers such as Gabrieli, Goudimel, Orlando di Lasso, Heinrich Schütz, Dietrich Buxtehude, J.S. Bach, Georg Frideric Handel, J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Maurice Duruflé and John Rutter. These are church music by shape or practice, which are less suitable for the mainstream Protestant services - such as cantatas, Masses, ancient and modern Passions Requiems, etc. These choral works are usually performed in the cantata series, every 1st Sunday of the month afternoon at 17.00 at the Nieuwe Kerk, and the Cantorij paricipitates in them several times a year. |
