Marijn Zwitserlood (Baritone)

Born: August 21, 1976 - The Netherlands

The Dutch baritone, Marijn Zwitserlood, studied solo singing at the Conservatorium in Utrecht with Harry Peeters (2002-2006). In May 2006, he successfully completed his singing studies with Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Singing . Only a few months later, he won the second prize at the Christina Deutekom Competition. Since then he regularly takes lessons with soprano Manuela Ochakovski and since 2011 he is regularly coached by pianist Reinild Mees. In addition, he attended master-classes with, among others, Christa Ludwig, Sergei Leiferkus, Jard van Nes, Robert Holl, George-Emil Crasnaru, Hans Nieuwenhuis, Marie Angel and Hilary Summers. During his studies he also participated twice in the Residents Artists Programme of the Nederlandse Reisopera, where he worked on Nick Shadow from The Rake's Progress by Igor Stravinsky and Golaud from Pelleas et Melisande by Claude Debussy. He also obtained his Master of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence from Universiteit Utrecht (1998-2007).

Since September 2006, Marijn Zwitserlood is a freelance baritone soloist and is hired on regular basis by several choirs in the Netherlands. Since March 2012, he sings in the Choir of De Nederlandse Opera. In the field of opera, he sang the role of The Captain in Siren Song by Jonathan Dove in a production from Grachtenfestival 2007, Amstedam (2007); Noye in Noye’s Fludde by Benjamin Britten with Laurenscantorij Rotterdam (2007); Baritone 2 in a vocal ensemble in the world premiere of De Waterman by Hans Koolmees with Muziektheater Hollands Diep, Dordrecht (2009); Dr. P. in The Man Who Took His Wife For A Hat by Michael Nyman, produced by VocaalLAB Nederland, at the Nyman Festival in Groningen (2009); Detective and First Drunken Man in the world premiere of A Dog’s Heart by Alexander Raskatov with the Dutch National Opera, Amstedam (2010). He also sang in 2016 the role of Lautsprecher in Der Kaiser von Atlantis by Victor Ullmann and in 2015 the role of Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell and Dulcamara in Liefdeselixer by Gaetano Donizetti. Other roles he has in his name include: Schaunard in La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini, Don Alfonso in Cosi fan tutte by W.A. Mozart. He played the role of Seneca in Monteverdish, a hip hop breakdance opera. This production by VocaalLAB Nederland was an adaptation from L'incoronatione di Poppea (Monteverdi). There was a tour through the Netherlands and Belgiem with about 35 perfomances (August December 2011), and a reprise in 2013.

Marijn Zwitserlood is also regularly heard as a soloist in oratorio works and Lieder. He sang Bass solo in Messa da Requiem by Verdi with the Utrechts Student Choir and Orchestra (USKO) (2007); Songs of Travel by Ralph Vaughan Williamss and Songs and Dances of Death by Modest Mussorgsky with pianist Gilbert den Broeder at Grachtenfestival 2007, Amsterdam (2007); Bass solo in Te Deum by Dvořák with Collegium Musicum Leiden (2007); Bass solo in Messe in C by L.v. Beethoven with Toonkunstkoor Nijmegen (2008); Baritone solo in Messa di Gloria by Puccini with Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam (2008); Bass solo in Requiem by W.A. Mozart with Utrechtse Oratorium Vereniging (2008); Baritone solo in 4 Palms by Grieg with Collegium Musicum Leiden (2008); Christ in Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach with Dudok Ensemble, Hilversum (2009); Bass and Baritone solo in Die Erste Walpurgisnacht by Felix Mendelssohn with USKO (2009); Baritone solo in Symphony No. 9’ by L.v. Beethoven with Consort de kleine Johannes, Amsterdam (2009); Bass solo in The Messiah by George Frideric Handel with Utrechtse Oratorium Vereniging (2009); Bass arias and Christ in Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach with USKO (2010); Kindertotenlieder by Gustav Mahler with Flehite Sinfonietta, Amersfoort (2010). Highlights of the past years include also: Johannes-Passion (BWV 245), Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) by J.S. Bach, Die Schopfung by Haydn, Ein Deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms, and Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini .
