The Swiss baritone, Samuel Zünd, studied singing with Margreet Honig at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam and with Christoph Prégardien at the Musikhochschule Zürich; Lieder interpretation with Rudolf Jansen (Amsterdam), Irwin Gage (Zürich) and Konrad Richter (Stuttgart); studies in Baroque singing with René Jacobs at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis; master-classes with Robert Holl and Hans Hotter, among others. In 1995 he was a winner at the won the Paula-Lindberg-Salomon in Berlin.
Samuel Zünd is co-founder of the Vokalensembles Zürich, and has appeared with them at Königsfelder Festspiele; Festival Tibor Varga; Schubertiaden Genève and London-Blackheath, among others. He is a regular guest in the Neuen Innsbrucker Hofkapelle (concert series and CD recordings in Austria and FRG with music from 16th and 17th centuries).
Since 1993 Samuel Zünd has acted as a soloist in opera, including Corpo in Cavallieri's Anima e Corpo, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Henry in Kurt Weill's Street Scene, as well as premieres e.g. of Beat Furrer's Invocation at the Opernhaus Zürich, concert and oratorio. He has co-operated with the conductors Marc Kissozcy, Jörg Ewald Dähler, Räto Tschupp, Michael Radulescu, Alois Koch among others.
Apart from his big affinity for the church music, Samuel Zünd dedicates himself with special devotion to Lieder singing, appearing in numerous Lieder recitals in Europe and the USA, with Theresia Schmid, his duo partner for many years. They appeared with Gert and Gisela Westphal (Recitation); Othmar Schoeck-Festival 2001 at Tonhalle Zürich, and Jeroen Sarphati (Lieder-CD Wandern). Radio- and TV recordings (DRS 2, Espace2, SWF, ORF1, NOS3; Arte, SF DRS I), and CD recording with Christoph Prégardien.
Samuel Zünd sang with the Close Harmony group of singers. Since 1990 he sings with the Sam Singers, dedicated to the re-discovery of nostalgic Evergreens, old Swiss hit and Swing-hits. They have appeared in big showbiz productions with Hazy Osterwald, Pepe Lienhard, Sandra Studer and Shawne Fielding, numerous TV and radio appearances, as well as various CD productions.
Recent and forthcoming concerts include: George Frideric Handel's Alexander's Feast and Solomon (September 2005, Rossini's Messe Solemnelle (September 2005, Johannes Brahms' Schöne Magelone (October 2005), Haydn's Nelsonmesse (ZKO, conducted by Howard Griffiths; Tonhalle Zürich November 2005), G.F. Handel's Samson (December 2005), Schubert's Winterreise (January 2006), Orff's Carmina Burana (November 2006). Since 2010, he has been singing regularly in the cantata cycle of Bach Collegium Zürich (13th season). In 2022 he participated as a guest in concert at the Bachfest Leipzig. |
