The Hong Kong-born baritone, Caleb Woo, holds degrees from the Hong Kong Baptist University including the Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy in 2006 with first class honor as well as the Bachelor of Social Science degree in China Studies (Geography Option) in 2003. Enhancing his services among churches, he obtained the Master of Arts degree in Christian Studies from the Divinity School of Chung Chi College, Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007. Caleb obtained his ATCL diploma and LRSM diploma in 2005 and 2009 respectively. His voice teachers include Prof. Robert McIver, Mr. Jimmy Foon-sheung Chan and Mr. Sanson Wing-sang Lau. 2 Tim. 2:2. Woo graduated with the Master of Music degree in Voice Performance and Literature at Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, New York, and work with vocal coaches Professor Benton Hess, Dr. Russell Miller and Dr. Jean Barr.
Caleb Woo regularly receives acclaim for the great expressive strength of a lyrical baritone voice with rounded artistry. He serves in churches regularly, besides individual engagements, he serves churches in Hong Kong and China through joining MusiCall Ministries since 2003. Woo has recently been honored as the finalists in Kneisel Lieder Competition 2011 and 2012, Eastman Friends of Opera Competition 2012 and the district winner (New York) of the NATS Competition. He is the Champion of the 2005 Hong Kong Youth Singing Festival. He is the recipient of the Ralph Yoars Memorial Scholarship, Stone of Help scholarship and Departmental (Music Department, Hong Kong Baptist University) Scholarship helped the studies of Caleb and that enabled him joining the Siena Summer Session for Music and the Arts (SSMA) program in 2005. He also received scholarships and graduate awards to continue his studies at Eastman School of Music. Woo appeared in the master-classes by Nicolas Cavallier in 2004, by Mariastella Di Lorenzo at Sessione Senese Per la Musica E L'Arte in 2005 and by Mira Zakai and Martina Arroyo at Eastman School of Music Voice Department in 2010 and 2012.
Besides performances as a recitalist, Caleb Woo performed many sacred solos, J.S. Bach’s B minor Mass (BWV 232), Cantata BWV 80: Ein feste Burg, Cantata BWV 82: Ich Habe Genung, Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), Magnificat (BWV 243), Dietrich Buxtehude’s Jesu Meine Freude, George Frideric Handel’s Te Deum, The Messiah, H. Purcell’s Psalm 96, W.A. Mozart’s Missa Brevis in F, Requiem, A. Bruckner’s Requiem, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony no.9-Ode to Joy, G. Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutshe Requiem, Puccini’s Missa di Gloria, Stainer’s Crucifixion, D. Urrows’ Exaltabo te and more. The solo career and collaborative eagerness brought him to Fort Worth, Austin, Dallas, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, Florence, Siena, Luzern, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Taipei, Beijing, Indonesia, Malaysia, Niigata, Fukuoka and Tokyo. He participated the local production of City Opera in French May 2010 performing Jupiter in Orphee aux Enfers. Caleb joined the Asian Youth Choir under the batons of Hak-Won Yoon, Hisae Hasegawa and Chifuru Matsubara in 2002 and 2009.
Caleb Woo loves percussion music and he learned percussion from Miss Sophia Woo and Rebecca Ng, African Drumming from Dr. Heung-Wing Lung and Raymond Leung. He collaborated with God with Us ministry (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Hymn Society and Allen-Hymn as a percussionist as well as a drummer. Caleb is the Bass Guitarist in Renfrew Group and TLOG band. He is also the arranger and co-director of the TLOG band. Caleb performed with the Voices, Ossia, Eastman Philharmonia, Eastman-Rochester Chorus, Rochester Oratorio Society, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Mercury Opera during his stay in Rochester, New York, and will appear in Harmonia Mundi record in 2012.
