The English tenor, David de Winter, was born in Surrey and grew up in a village called West Byfleet, , then in Camberley. As soon as he could speak he could sing! I has vague memories of singing in church when he was about 4 or 5. He started singing professionally as a chorister when he was 8 years old with Westminster Cathedral Choirl then then he went to RGS Guildford for his secondary education. After that he read Music at Durham.. He used to play the cello until he was 16; he still plays the piano and he taught himself the basics of the guitar. When he was at university he used to play the piano and sing in a jazz band too. He studied at the Royal Grammar School and at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
David de Winter is currently a lay clerk at Westminster Cathedral, and he is also a freelance opera singer and soloist. He did some stuff for Regents Opera, including W.A. Mozart's Magic Flute in Windsor. He did a few shows like opera Holland Park, and he was also in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring for Shadwell Opera in Cambridge in June 2012. In May 2013 he was on tour with English Touring Opera (ETO), performing W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte and Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, and in both of those he was just in the chorus; but on the same tour they were doing an educational show, Laika the Spacedog, to introduce the next generation to opera, and for that he sang the lead tenor role. After the ETO tour, he sang in B. Britten's Billy Budd at Glyndebourne. He now lives in Croydon, which is in south London. |
