Yaron Windmüller (Baritone)

Born: 1957 - Israel

The Israeli baritone, Yaron Windmüller [Windmiller], is quite an exception among singers of his generation. Gifted with an extraordinary talent for interpretation, the singer has been making a name for himself with Lieder recitals, as well as on the operatic stage and on the concert platform. His versatility can be seen in the wide and varied scope of his repertoire, which in the field of opera encompasses both lyrical and character parts, and in the Lieder and concert fields includes works from pre-classical composers, classical and romantic works as well as twentieth century repertoire.

Yaron Windmüller's important contribution to the interpretation of contemporary music deserves a particular mention in this context. He has been co-operating closely with composers such as Reimann, Hosokawa, Bialas, Franke, Rihm, von Bose and others who have entrusted him with numerous first performances of new works.

On the operatic stage Yaron Windmüller has been much in demand for his particularly intense analysis of the character of his roles. Special mention should be made of some recent interpretations, such as the role of Kovaliov in Dmitri Shostakovich's The Nose, the title roles in Alban Berg's Wozzeck and Franke's Mottke der Dieb (first performance), the role of Edgar in Hosokawa's Vision of Lear (first performance) and that of Paolo in Simone Boccanegra. The singer started his operatic career at the Bayerische Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, moving on to guest appearances at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, at Augsburg Opera. at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, Opera North in Leeds and at festivals such as the Munich Biennale, the 2nd Theatre Olympics in Shizuoka and the New Zealand Festival.

On the concert platform, Yaron Windmüller worked with conductors such as Sergiu Celibidache, Zubin Mehta, Gary Bertini, Helmuth Rilling, and Christoph Eschenbach. He sang concerts with orchestras such as the Münchner Philharmoniker, Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonieorchester des Saarländischen Rundfunks and others. With the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, he enjoyed a major success with the first performance of Reimann's Cantata Kumi Ori in January 2000. In the field of chamber music, he worked with ensembles such as the Arditti Quartett or the Vogler Quartett.

Yaron Windmüller is a representative of a new generation of Lied singers, accompanied by renowned pianists such as Christoph Eschenbach, Robert Levin and Axel Bauni. He has given high profile Lied recitals, including a German tour with Die schöne Magellone as well as at the Munich Biennale, at the Rheingau Musikfestival, at the Takefu Festival (Japan) and the MusikTriennale Cologne. In the context of the cultural programme of events in the German pavilion at the EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Windmüller, together with Axel Bauni, was responsible for the concept of the project week Lied:Strahl dedicated to Lied singing.

Yaron Windmüller's 1995 recording (Orfeo) of the complete Lieder oeuvre of Viktor Ullmann, accompanied by pianist Axel Bauni, was a major critical success. CD publications planned for the near future include Lieder by Boris Blacher, Milhaud's Sacred Service with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gerard Schwarz, as well as Verdi's Simone Boccanegra conducted by Marco Guidarini.

Since 1997, Yaron Windmüller has been a professor at the Hochschule des Saarlandes für Musik und Theater. Since 2000 he has been Artistic Director of the opera studios of the New Israeli Opera in the Tel Aviv. Among the singers who have studied with him and/or attended him master-classes: Thomas Dorn (Tenor), Michael Marz (Baritone).
