The English organist, Andrew Wilson, was born and educated in Leeds. He studied the piano and organ at school with Michael Harris, achieving his ARCO and LTCL diplomas before embarking on undergraduate study at Edinburgh University, where he studied with John Kitchen. He graduated with First Class Honours in 1992 and went on to study for an MA in 18th Century English Music at Cardiff University, with particular emphasis on the oratorio in England after George Frideric Handel.
After leaving university Andrew Wilson was Assistant Director of Music at Ipswich School and the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, before becoming Director of Music at the Royal Grammar School, Worcester in 2000. He is currently Director of Music and a Housemaster at Milton Abbey School in Dorset. He holds Fellowship diplomas from both the Royal College of Organists and the Trinity College of Music. His recent FRCO success included winning a number of prizes (including the Limpus Prize) and the awarding of a Silver Medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians. He has held a number of organist and choirmaster positions, the most recent of which was at Malvern Priory, a position he held for six years (2000-2006), and he oversaw the rebuilding of the four manual Rushworth and Dreaper organ by Nicholson's of Malvern. Whilst he was there the choir made three highly succesful recordings and his debut solo organ recital CD ("A Malvern Mixture") was recorded there, currently available on the Regent label. Whilst in Worcester, he conducted Pershore Choral Society for six years.
Andrew Wilson is also an active adjudicator for music competitions and an Associated Board examiner, organist, and composer and arranger of music. He is currently on the reviews panel of the Organists' Review and has also contributed a number of articles in recent issues. He lives in Dorset with his wife and three young children. |
