The German pianist, Caroline Weichert, began playing the piano at the age of 6, before entering the class of her father, Gregor Weichert, when she was 16. She later became a pupil of Renate Kretschmar-Fischer at the Musikhochschule in Detmold, where she received her diploma in 1989. To complete her training, she studied in Hamburg, Paris and Freiburg with renowned professors such as Conrad Hansen, Vitaly Margulis and Yvonne Lefébure. A prize-winner at the Busoni, German Chopin and Schubert competitions, her double victory at the ‘Young Artists’ Concerts’ competition, organized by the German Musikrat, was decisive for the beginnings of her career.
Since then, Caroline Weichert has appeared regularly as a soloist with with some of the most important German orchestras, such as the Baden-Baden Philharmonic, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie and Telekom-Orchester. She also gives numerous recitals and chamber music concerts. Her repertoire ranges from romantic music (from Johannes Brahms to Ferruccio Busoni) to 20th century classical music, especially from Russia and Germany. She has a particular interest in lesser known pieces from the last century and in jazz and ethnic music. This is attested to by a vast discography for the Koch/Schwann label, in company with members of the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg.
She received a Discobole award from the Académie du Disque Français for her recording début featuring the complete piano works by Dmitri Shostakovich. In addition, Caroline Weichert, who also composes and arranges, has recorded a disc devoted to her own music, including the compositions Hexentanz and Ragtime.
Since 1992 Caroline Weichert is professor of piano at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg, and since 2000 she lives in Cadrezzate (Varese). |
