Sohie Wedell (Violin)

Born: Germany

The German violinst, Sophie Wedell, graduated from Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart (2011). She obtained her Bachelor of Music and her Master of Music degrees in Classical Violin Performance from the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover (2011-2016), having studied Anke Dill, Ulf Schneider and Anne Röhrig. Subsequently she decided to follow her interest in Early Music and moved to the Netherlands, where she studied with Kati Debretzeni and Walter Reiter for her Master of Arts degree in Historical Violin Performance Practice at the Koninklijk Conservatorium - Royal Conservatoire Den Haag (2016-2019). Further inspiration came from Mauricio Fuks, Daniel Sepec, Eberhardt Feltz, François Fernandez and Enrico Gatti.

Sophie Wedell specializes both in historical as well as modern violin and divides her time between solo, chamber music and orchestral playing as a permanent member of the Orchestra of the 18th Century. She has recently released her CD debut "The Habsburg Garden: of Eden of 18th Century cantatas with solo violin with Brilliant Classics. She has been a guest concert-master of ensembles and orchestras such as Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of the 18th Century and Compagnia di Punto, and is regularly invited to perform with groups like La Tempestad or Il Pomo d'Oro.

Her passion for chamber music brought her to play in various ensemble formations. From 2011 to 2015 she was a founding member of the string trio Trio Amun. In 2012, the trio received the Special Prize in the International String Trio Competition Munich, and in 2014, they were finalists of the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb. In 2013 she held a scholarship from the chamber music festival “Heidelberger Frühling” where she performed Jörg Widmann’s Oktett together with the composer. She plyays Baroque Violin with Ensemble Arava since 2014.

Sophie Wedell believes that every era has brought forth amazing music that is worth listening to. Hence she has always been an avid player of contemporary music, taking part in an exchange program of the composition classes of Tel Aviv and Stuttgart universities, as well as performing in the ECLAT Festival, Stuttgart, in 2011. In 2013 she performed and recorded the European premiere of Elliot Carter’s string trio (2011) with Trio Amun. She is a (founding) member of ensemble Reflektor and of Orchester im Treppenhaus; both ensembles aim for bold performance concepts off the beaten track. She plays regularly with various free groups such as the northern Germany based ensemble la Festa Musicale.

Her curiosity has lead her to perform music ranging from the Baroque period to contemporary repertoire in renowned festivals and venues across Europe, such as the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, Resonanzen Festival Vienna, Heidelberger Frühling and ECLAT Festival.

Sophie Wedell strives to create engaging and personal concert experiences. This has earned her and her Ensemble Arava the first prize and audience prize at the International Competition for Concert Presentation 2017 in Frankfurt. The ensemble has furthermore been awarded a special prize at the International H.I.F. Biber Competition 2017 and is regularly invited to perform at festivals throughout Europe and Israel. Since 2019 she is one of few select young artists supported by the Jumpstart Jr. Foundation of Amsterdam. The foundation kindly loans her a fine Italian violin made by Gioffredo Cappa in Turino, around 1700.
