Alex Wasserman (Conductor)

Born: March 26, 1963 - São Paulo, Brazil

The Brazilian-born Israeli composer, conductor and cellist, Alex Wasserman, studied composition and conducting at the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel-Aviv with Professor Abel Erlich and violoncello with Zvi Harel (Bachelor of Music degree). He continued his studies in New York where he studied violoncello with Peter Willy (Beaux Art Trio) and conducting with Michael Chary at The Mannes College of music (Master of Music degree); and composition, cello and conducting at Northern Illinois University (Master of Music degree). He later pursued a doctorate degree in composition from The Julliard School in New York (Class of 1996). He was awarded The Israeli music institute award, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival Fellowship, Aspen Music Festival Scholarship, Albert Szirmai Scholarship, and Henry Mancini Fellowship

Alex Wasserman is considered as one of Israel leading composers. His works had been performed in Israel, USA and Europe in concerts held by The Aspen Music Festival Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, The Israeli composers league, Musica Nova, The Tel Aviv Chamber Music Society series of concerts 1998-2004, The Tel Aviv International Biennale of contemporary music 2000 and 2002. He has been commissioned and performed by by several performers, performance groups and festivals in Israel and abroad, including Rivka Golani, Marc Johnson of Vermeer String Quartet, Aviv String Quartet, Aims music festival –-Barcelona, Beer Sheva Sinfonieta, Opole Philharmonia, "Contempo" music festival, Kfar Bloom Music Festival and others. He has published one of his compositions for Flute and Strings at the Israel Music Institute.

Alex Wasserman is active as a conductor, and serves as music director of several ensembles. He is currently The music director and conductor of the Ramat Gan Symphony Orchestra, The Tel Aviv Chamber Music Society and he is also the principal of The Ramat Gan Music Center. He is an Instructor and Lecturer at the Open University and ‘Hed’ College of Music, teaches theory and composition in several high-schools and conservatories, played the cello in different orchestras and practices conducting and composition. He currently lives in Ramat Aviv, Tel Aviv, Israel.
