The American mezzo-soprano and music pedagogue, Ivy Buterbaugh-Walzs, studied at Westtown School in Westtown, Pennsy. She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education/Performance; her Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Ithaca College in New York; and her DMA in Vocal Pedagogy Voice Performance from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati (Class of 2008). Recent vocal studies have been with Barbara Honn and Mary Henderson-Stucky. She has worked closely with coaches Kenneth Griffiths, Donna Loewy, Marie-France LeFebvre and Diane Richardson. In 2012 she was selected for a fellowship by the National Association of Teachers of Singing to perform at SongFest where she worked with Martin Katz, Graham Johnson, John Musto, Amy Burton, William Bolcom and Joan Morris. She was awarded semi-finalist for the Joy in Singing Competition in 2012 and 2013.
Ivy Walz is a performer of oratotio, chamber music, art song, opera and cabaret. Favorite operatic main stage roles include Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Nicklause in Les Contes D'Hoffmann and Dido in Dido and Aeneas. She has performed with Cincinnati Opera, Syracuse Opera, Tri-Cities Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera and the Spoleto Festival. Some of her most recent concert performances include mezzo solos in the Verdi's Requiem, Mozart's Mass in C minor and J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245). She has been lauded for her performances of contemporary music and recently performed with composer Jake Heggie as a guest recitalist. Other recent performances include Luciano Berio's Folk Songs and Ravel Chanson Madécasses. She was Artist in Residence at Tri-Cities Opera in Binghamton, New York (2003-2006); Artist at Syracuse Opera (2004-2007); Apprentice Artist at Des Moines Metro Opera in Indianola, Iowa (2006); Corbett Young Artist at Cincinnati Opera (2009-2011).
Ivy Walz was General Music Teacher at South Seneca Central School in Ovid, New York (1998 to 2000). She held positions at SUNY Cortland and Cornell University. She also taught as a Graduate Assistant at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati (2008-2010). In 2011, she joined the voice faculty at Ithaca College in 2011, whe she is is Assistant Professor of Voice. She teaches there a vibrant studio made up of students majoring in vocal performance, music education, musical theater, jazz studies and composition. She also teaches a vocal pedagogy course called Basics of Vocal Mechanics which examines the anatomy and function of the voice as an instrument. She is married to Peter Walz. |
