Stephen Wallace (Counter-tenor)

Born: England

The English counter-tenor, Stephen Wallace, studied with Neil Howlett at the Royal Northern College of Music, and subsequently worked with Anthony Rolfe-Johnson at the Britten Pears School, Snape Maltings. He now studies with Robert Dean.

Opera appearances include Semele for the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, English National Opera, the Innsbruck Early Music Festival and at Théâtre Champs-Elysées in Paris, Speranza Orfeo under René Jacobs for La Monnaie in Brussels, London, Dresden and Aix-en-Provence, Voice of Apollo in Death in Venice for Opera Zuid, title role in Radamisto at the Halle Festival, Didymus in Theodora with Emmanuelle Haïm for Glyndebourne on Tour and also with Jane Glover for Opéra National du Rhin, Strasbourg, Narciso in Agrippina for Chicago Opera Theater and English National Opera (ENO), the world première of Harrison Birtwistle’s The Last Supper with Daniel Barenboim at the Deutsche Staatsoper, Berlin and subsequently for Glyndebourne Festival, L’Umana fragilita and Anfinomus in Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria in Opera North’s revival and for the Buxton Festival, Queen of the Fairies in Iolanthe for Grange Park Opera, title role in Orfeo ed Euridice for English Touring Opera, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus for the Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra and Dublin Lyric Opera, Ottone in L’incoronazione di Poppea in Strasbourg, Flavio with Christian Curnyn and the Early Opera Group, Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea for Opera Theatre Company, Orfeo for the Handel & Haydn Society in Boston, Endymion in La Calisto at the Iford Festival and Truth in Gerald Barry’s Triumph of Beauty & Deceit for Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra with Thomas Adès. Stephen subsequently sang the role of Pleasure in Triumph of Beauty & Deceit for the Ives Ensemble at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and for his debut at Carnegie Hall, New York. Recent engagements include Jason Giasone for the Early Opera Company, Harrison Birtwistle’s The Last Supper for the London Sinfonietta in Italy, J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Norway, a solo recital at the December Nights (Pushkin Museum) in Moscow and title role in Tamerlano for Opera by Definition. Recent engagements include Ruggiero in George Frideric Handel’s Alcine for Opera Theatre Company and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater in Moscow.

Stephen Wallace is also a committed concert artist and his diverse repertoire includes Agostino in Johann Adolf Hasse’s La Conversione di Sant’Agostino for Il Coro d’Orfeo in Milan (due for CD release in 2009), Purcell’s Odes with Les Arts Florissants under William Christie, concert performances of Theodora with Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert d'Astrée, J.S. Bach’s Magnificat (BWV 243) with the Israel Camerata Orchestra Jerusalem, G.F. Handel’s Messiah on tour in Japan with the Bach Collegium Japan, G.F. Handel’s Messiah and Saul with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under Tonu Kaljuste, Antonio Vivaldi’s Dixit Dominus and G.F. Handel’s Nisi Dominus with the Israel Camerata Orchestra Jerusalem, St John Passion (BWV 245) in Bath Abbey, B Minor Mass (BWV 232), television and CD recordings of J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), A. Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater for the Rambert Dance Company and recordings of Thomas Arne’s Alfred for the BBC Radio 3 series Britannia at the Opera, Dido and Aeneas for Harmonia Mundi, Armindo Partenope and Athamas Semele with Christian Curnyn for Chandos, an Arvo Pärt disc for Black Box, Elisa Is The Fayrest Quene also for Chandos and George Lloyd’s Requiem for Albany Records.

Recent engagements include J.S. Bach' St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) at Bath Abbey, Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice for Korean National Opera in Seoul, Athamas in Semele for the Théâtre de Champs Elysées in Paris and Medoro in Orlando for Opéra de Lille, Théâtre de Champs Elysées and Opéra Dijon. Future engagements include Saul with Daniel Reuss and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Carmina Burana at the Royal Albert Hall and Messiah in Salzburg.
