Anna Wall (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: England

The English soprano, Anna Wall, studied at Leeds University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (GSMD), where she completed the GSMD Opera Course before spending two years in the Atelier Lyrique of the Opéra National de Paris where she won the prestigious Prix Lyrique de l’Arop awarded by the Friends of the Opéra National de Paris.

Anna Wall made her début at the Opéra National de Paris as Il paggio in Rigoletto, followed by Tisbe in La Cenerentola, Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and Una Cretese in W.A. Mozart's Idomeneo. Her major engagements have included Flosshilde in Das Rheingold and Siegrune and Grimegerde in Die Walküre at the Opéra de Dijon, Junon in Charpentier’s Acteon and Fortuna and Venere/Pallade in L'incoronazione di Poppea, both with Le Concert d'Astrée under Emmanuelle Haïm at the Opéra de Dijon and the Opéra de Lille, Deuxième Dame in La Flûte Enchantée for Opéra en Plein Air, and Concepcion in L’Heure Espagnol as a guest soloist for the Atelier Lyrique.

Anna Wall's roles at the Atelier Lyrique included Hermia in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream under Edward Gardner, Lucretia in B. Britten's The Rape of Lucretia, Dorabella in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte (performed at the Opera de Rennes), Dido in Dido and Aeneas, Idamante in Idomeneo and The Madwoman in Les Aveugles. She covered Cherubino in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro for the Opéra de Paris and performed Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos at Fondation Royaumont under stage director Andre Engel.

Before moving to Paris Anna Wall’s engagements had included Mercedes in Georges Bizet's Carmen for Longborough Festival Opera, Barena in Jenufa for English Touring Opera, Lucilla in La Scala di Seta for Independent Opera, and Herdswoman and Aunt in Jenůfa at the St Endellion Festival under Richard Hickox. She performed Siegrune in Die Walküre in concert under Anthony Legge, and took part in workshops as Samira in Tangier Tattoo for Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and in Bird of Night/Letters of a Love Betrayed in Another America: Fire by Errolyn Wallen at the Royal Opera House. Other roles included Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro for the Festival Rotas dos Monumentos in Portugal, and Béatrice in Béatrice et Bénédict, Bianca in The Rape of Lucretia, and Joachim in Susanna at the GSMD.

On the concert platform, Anna Wall made her début in the Royal Albert Hall in W.A. Mozart's Requiem under Sir David Willcocks. Other engagements have included Messiah in Münster, and performances of J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), St John Passion (BWV 245) and B Minor Mass (BWV 232),Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Dvořak's Stabat Mater, Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius.

Anna Wall recently performed Second Nymph in Rusalka at the Opéra de Paris and Der Trommler in Der Kaiser von Atlantis with ARCAL in Paris and on a European Tour and a commercial recording.
