Alexei Volodin (Piano)

Born: July 17, 1977 - Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Russia

The Russian pianist, Alexei Volodin (Russian: Алексей Володин), began taking piano lessons there at the age of 9. A year later he moved to Moscow, where he studied first with Irina Chaklina and later with Tatiana Zelikman at the Gnessin Music School. In 1994 he enrolled at the Moscow Conservatory and at the end of his studies there in 2001 in the master-class of Professor Eliso Virsaladze. 2001-2002 he rounded off his studies at the Theo Lieven International Piano Foundation in Como, Italy. He gained international recognition following his victory at the 9th International Géza Anda Competition in Zürich in 2003.

Acclaimed for his highly sensitive touch and technical brilliance, Alexei Volodin possesses an extraordinarily diverse repertoire from L.v. Beethoven and Johannes Brahms through Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninov and Prokofiev to Scriabin, Rodion Shchedrin and Medtner. He looks back on a remarkable career: he gave recitals all over the world, and has performed with prestigious orchestras, such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra della Radio Svizzera Italiana, SWR Radio Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio, Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Tonhalle Orchester Zürich. He has worked with conductors like Riccardo Chailly, Mikhail Pletnev, Eiji Oue, Gerd Albrecht, Carlo Rizzi, Zoltán Kocsis, David Zinman, Valery Gergiev and Vladimir Fedoseyev, among others. Recent seasons have included performances with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, The Mariinsky Orchestra, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and NHK Symphony Orchestra and NCPA Orchestra China, as well as tours with SWR Radio Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, Russian National Orchestra and Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.

An active chamber musician, Alexei Volodin has a long-standing collaboration with the Borodin Quartet. In 2019-2020, they will be joined by trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov for performances at the Southbank Centre and Istanbul Music Festival. Previous chamber partners include Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, Mischa Maisky and Sol Gabetta, as well as the Modigliani Quartet, Cuarteto Casals and Cremona Quartet.

Alexei Volodin has performed in venues including Wiener Konzerthaus, Barcelona’s Palau de la Música, Mariinsky Theatre, Paris’ Philharmonie, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Tonhalle Zürich and Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional de Música. A regular artist at festivals, he has performed at Kaposvár International Chamber Music Festival, Festival Les nuits du Château de la Moutte, Variations Musicales de Tannay, Bad Kissingen Sommer Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron, Les Rencontres Musicales d’Évian, Festival La Folle Journée, The White Nights Festival in St Petersburg, St. Magnus International Festival and the Moscow Easter Festival.

In 2018-2019 season, Alexei Volodin appeared in the International Piano Series at the Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall and the Meesterpianisten Series at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, as well as recitals in Bratislava, Ostrava, Den Haag, Oxford and Winnipeg. Highlights of the 2019-2020 season include concerts with Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, working with conductors Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kent Nagano, Pietari Inkinen and Robert Trevino. He will also appear with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for a special project performing a cycle of L.v. Beethoven's Concertos and the Choral Fantasy.

Alexei Volodin’s latest album with the Mariinsky label was Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.4, conducted by Gergiev. Recording for Challenge Classics, Volodin’s disc of solo S. Rachmaninov works was released in 2013. He also recorded a solo album of Robert Schumann, Ravel and Scriabin, and his earlier Frédéric Chopin disc won a Choc de Classica and was awarded five stars by Diapason.

Alexei Volodin is an exclusive Steinway artist. Since 2012, he has been an artists under general management of the leading British artist agency HarrisonParrott Ltd.
