The Ecuadorian conductor, Andrea Vela, obtained her and also a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin from Louisville University (1993-1997); her Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (2004-2007); and her Artist Diploma from the Catholic University of America in Washington DC (2019-2021). She has studied conducting with great teachers such as: Zhang Guoyong, Karolos Trikolidis, Yoel Levi, Harold Farberman, Simeone Tartaglione and Murray Sidlin. Since December 2023, she studieds for Diploma in History of Arts at Universidad Lux Educación Continua Latam.
Since the age of 22, Andrea Vela have conducted diverse ensembles and symphony orchestras in different parts of the world, including: Washington DC, Louisville, Northern Virginia, Haifa, Tel-Aviv, Kielce, Varna, Kielce, Minsk, Debrecen, Arkhangelsk, Guanzhou, Fondi, Vigévano, Ibagué, Bogotá, Chile, Rosario, Arequipa, Lima, Piura, Havana, San Salvador, Quito, Loja, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Bad-Ausse and Mexico City. As a musical director, she has worked with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador (December 2008-2012), the Metropolitan Symphony Band of Quito (1999-2000), and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Loja (March 2012-July 2019).
Andrea Vela has also taught at the National Conservatory of Music in Quito (1999-2000), the Salvador Bustamante Celi Conservatory in Loja, the Franz Liszt Conservatory (2001-2002), and the Faculty of Arts at the Central University of Ecuador (since 2021). She as an assistant professor at the Catholic University of America (2019-2021).
Andrea Vela is currently a professor at the Faculty of Arts of the Central University of Ecuador (UCE) (since 2021) and Musical Director of the UCE Experimental Orchestra (since 2021). She also maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor. Since March 2024, she is Musical Director of the Corporación Orquesta Sinfónica del Mundo in Quito, Pichincha
Andrea Vela's artistic inclination has always been directed towards the training of young people and the dissemination of new talents. Together with symphony orchestras, she has carried out projects for Young Soloists, to identify and promote young virtuoso musicians; special concerts, with a playful and educational tone; concerts of Ecuadorian Sacred Music, to increase the Ecuadorian musical heritage; and the “Andrea Vela” Orchestral Conducting Seminar, aimed at training orchestra conductors in training. She has been awarded several distinctions that highlight my vocation as a teacher and director. Among them, can be mentioned: “Symbol Woman” by the Voltaire Masonic Lodge, Woman of the Year 2018 and the “Matilde Hidalgo de Procel” Medal. In 2023, she received Honorary Spanish Doctorate from the Universidad Anglo Hispanomexicana. |
