The Brazilian soprano, Marília Vargas, started her voice studies at the age of 12 under the tutelage of Neyde Thomas. She graduated in Baroque Singing at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, in Switzerland, and later specialized in Lied and Oratorio with Christoph Prégardien at the Zürich Conservatory, where she received summa cum laude honors. She has also taken classes with Monserrat Figueras, Silvana Bartoli Bazzoni and Barbara Bonney. Marília was awarded accolades at the 2nd Bidu Sayão International Vocal Competition and the 6th Maria Callas Brazilian Competition; she also received scholarships from the Friedl Wald Foundation and the Margherite Meyer Stiftung from Switzerland.
Marília Vargas is one of the most active Brazilian sopranos of her generation. She has performed as a soloist along with several orchestras, including the Aargauer Symphony, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Zürcher Kammerorchester, Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná, Orquestra Sinfônica da Petrobrás, Orquestra Sinfônica de Minas Gerais, Camerata Antiqua de Curitiba, Orquestra Sinfônica do Brazil (OSB) and Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP); with early music ensembles such as La Capella Reial de Catalunya (under the direction of Jordi Savall) and Le Parlement de Musique (under the direction of Martin Gester); and in theatres such as Theater Basel, Stadt Casino Bern, Tonhalle Zürich, Wiener Konzerthaus, Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, Sala São Paulo, Palácio das Artes, Auditorium de Dijon, Arsenal Metz, Theatre Royal du Palais de Versailles, Berliner Konzerthaus, Auditorium and Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona and Helsinki Music Centre.
She has also recorded material for numerous television and radio shows in Brazil and Europe and has been featured in several CD’s and DVD’s. Her two solo CDs, “Todo amor desta terra” and “Tempo breve que passaste: Modinhas Brasileiras” were sponsored by the Municipal Law for the Encouragement of Culture of Curitiba - Brazil, and are currently almost sold out.
Marília Vargas was the creator and artistic director of the 1st Early Music Festival of Curitiba, held in October 2011. The project was also approved by the Municipal Law for the Encouragement of Culture of Curitiba, and a second edition is planned for 2014.
Marília Vargas is regularly invited to participate as a guest lecturer and for master classes in many important music festivals and universities in Brazil. In March 2013, she was appointed as a professor at the São Paulo Music Conservatory (EMESP). |
